Initiatives that don't work

According to Dobbin and Kalev’s analyses, the following initiatives don’t work to increase diversity. In fact, they can cause diversity to decline.

Mandatory diversity training
Required training results in knowledge of bias, but doesn’t increase diversity.

Only showing groups with statistically significant changes.

Job tests
Job candidates are required to take mandatory tests. Managers tend to resent the formal control of such systems and often selectively ignore results.

Grievance systems
Grievance-reporting programs provide a way for employees to formally complain about being mistreated at work. The systems are often circumvented, and retaliation for grievances is common.
